Music, more than anything, is an intricate thread in the fabric of New York City culture. David Gelman is a piece of that fabric, having been part of the New York City music scene for most of his adult life. Gelman was born and raised in New York City. He studied music at the City University of NY as well as film scoring at the NYU Tisch School.
David has been writing songs dating back to the 1980’s for other artists, with major releases in the USA, Europe, and Japan. Recently, David co-wrote with Dana Fuchs, a major blues artist (featured in the movie Across the Universe), on her Love Lives On album. Over the last 10 or so years, David has found his own voice, and began writing and performing his own songs throughout Europe and many clubs in the NYC area.
In 2011, David released his first solo album “All Roads Lead Here”, followed by his second album “Undertow” in 2013. “Last Surviving Son” was released in 2019, reaching number 2 on the Alternative Folk Charts.
His newest album, “Dusty Highway” was released in July and reached the Top 200 on the AMA Charts. The album features the hit singles High Road and Lay Me Down, which has over 135,000 streams on Spotify, to date. Given the success of his previous album, David attracted some of the industry’s best talent in NYC to be a part of “Dusty Highway.” This includes producer Tim Hatfield (worked with Debbie Harry, Damnwells, Death Cab for Cutie, Steve Earle, Marshall Crenshaw), and musicians Charley Drayton on Drums (Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Neil Young, Rolling Stones), Ann Klein on Guitar (Waitress, Almost Famous, Head Over Heels, Kinky Boots), Rob Arthur on Keyboards (Peter Frampton), Bette Sussman on Piano (Bette Midler), Lorenza Ponce on Violin (Bon Jovi, Adele), David Mansfield on Mandolin (Bob Dylan), and various other musicians.
